WASHINGTON, DC – A man wanted in the fatal stabbing of 56-year-old Charles Sharp on 14th Street was arrested nearly two months after the killing, with the operation taking another turn when a dog charged officers and was fatally shot after an electronic control device failed to stop it.

Andrew Tyree Richardson, 25, of Northwest DC, was arrested Sunday at approximately 9:43 a.m., according to the Metropolitan Police Department.

The arrest stemmed from a July 11 homicide in the 2900 block of 14th Street Northwest.

Officers were called to the area at approximately 12:52 a.m. that day for a reported stabbing and found Sharp suffering from a stab wound.

DC Fire and EMS responded but found no signs consistent with life. Sharp, a Northwest DC resident, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Richardson was later wanted in connection with the killing.

MPD officers located him Sunday and took him into custody under a DC Superior Court arrest warrant.

Richardson was charged with second-degree murder while armed.

He was also charged with first-degree burglary and possession of a BB gun under a separate case number, according to MPD. The department did not provide additional details about those charges in Tuesday’s release.

The arrest operation also triggered an officer-involved shooting investigation.

MPD said a dog emerged from a different residence and charged at officers who already had Richardson in custody.

One officer discharged an electronic control device at the dog, but the attempt was unsuccessful.

A separate officer then fired a service pistol, striking the dog. The animal died from its injuries.

Neither Richardson nor any MPD officers were injured during the encounter.

The officer-involved shooting is being investigated by MPD’s Internal Affairs Bureau Force Investigations Team, which investigates law enforcement officer-involved shootings in the District.

MPD said body-worn camera footage is being released pursuant to District of Columbia law.

The charges against Richardson are accusations and have not been proven in court.
