TRENTON, NJ – New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy on Wednesday released the state’s weekly update on COVID-19 breakthrough cases, reporting 65,521 fully vaccinated individuals have tested positive for the virus. This total represents 43,131breakthrough cases in the state since September.
Today, Murphy downplayed that sharp three-month increase which saw 20,000 breakthrough cases each month since.
“Even as some individuals’ protection has begun to wane, which is the reason why you need to get a booster, the initial vaccination courses continue to perform very well,” Governor Murphy said. “This is now, remember, our entire lived history with the vaccines from January 19th through November 29th.”
Murphy glossed over the glaring trend that more than two-thirds of the breakthrough cases happened in the most recent three-month period where there were just 20,000 in the entire eight months prior.
339 fully vaccinated New Jerseyans have since died from COVID-19.
The rate of transmission in New Jersey is also increasing from under 1 just a few weeks ago to 1.36 this week as New Jersey is still averaging between 3,500 and 5,000 new cases each day.
The positivity rate in New Jersey has climbed to 9.6% this week and this is all as the delta variant remains the primary strain infecting New Jersey residents. The delta variant represented 98.9% of COVID-19 cases in New Jersey over the past 4 weeks.
