1. Reporting Lost or Abandoned Dogs: If you notice a loose or abandoned dog, please call the Utica Police Department at 315-735-3301 and press 0. Provide a description of the dog, the location, and the circumstances of its discovery.
2. Securing and Attempting Owner Reunification: If the Utica Police Department or Animal Control secures the animal and cannot locate the owner, the dog will be held temporarily at the police department. During this period, the department will use social media and other resources to attempt to reunite the dog with its owner.
3. Facility Investments: Significant investments have been made in the facilities for holding these animals. New, large holding pens and other improvements have been implemented to ensure that dogs receive the best possible care while in custody.
4. Policy on Surrendered Dogs: It is important to note that this service is exclusively for lost, abandoned, or found loose dogs. The police will not accept dogs from owners who simply wish to relinquish ownership.
5. Transfer to Wanderer’s Rest: If an owner cannot be located, the animal will be transported to Wanderer’s Rest Humane Association. Should an owner be identified later, efforts will be made to facilitate reunification. If no owner is found, the association will prioritize adoption and re-homing the dog.
