MINNEAPOLIS — Police are investigating the fatal shooting of a 24-year-old man in South Minneapolis after a confrontation between two men escalated into gunfire. The incident occurred on the evening of September 3 near the intersection of 1st Avenue South and East 19th Street.
Officers from the Fifth Precinct responded to the scene at approximately 7:00 p.m. They found the victim, identified as De’Jaun Marquise Michael Hall, suffering from life-threatening gunshot wounds. Officers provided medical aid until emergency medical services arrived, but Hall was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara, preliminary information indicates Hall was part of a group of about ten people when an altercation with another man led to the shooting.
William Howard Sanders IV, also known as Jason Jerrell Herron IV, has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with the shooting.
He later admitted to the shooting, saying he thought his victim was suspicious for wearing a hoodie on a nice warm day.
Chief O’Hara acknowledged the area’s history of issues and expressed frustration with the challenges of preventing such violence, despite a police presence. “It’s frustrating because this is a location that we know has been problematic in the past,” O’Hara said. “We’re here to try and speak on behalf of those that can no longer speak for themselves.”
Police secured the scene and canvassed the area as the investigation continues.
