PLAINS, Ga. — Weeks after fulfilling his deathbed wish to vote for Vice President Kamala Harris in November, former U.S. President Jimmy Carter has died, according to a statement from his family.

Former President Jimmy Carter, who rose from a peanut farm in Georgia to the highest office in the land and became a global advocate for peace and human rights, died Sunday at his home in Plains. He was 100 years old.

Carter’s death was announced by his son, James E. Carter III, nearly a year after the former president entered hospice care in February 2023 following a diagnosis of metastatic melanoma. His wife, Rosalynn Carter, passed away earlier this year.

Born on October 1, 1924, Carter was the longest-living president in U.S. history and the first to reach the milestone age of 100. He served as the 39th president from 1977 to 1981, following a career in the U.S. Navy, business, and Georgia politics. His presidency was defined by major achievements in diplomacy, including the Camp David Accords between Israel and Egypt, but also economic challenges and the Iran hostage crisis.

After leaving office, Carter dedicated his life to humanitarian work, founding the Carter Center in 1982 to promote democracy, human rights, and public health worldwide. He won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 for his efforts, becoming one of only a handful of U.S. presidents to receive the honor.
