JERSEY CITY, NJ — A 28-year-old man has been charged in connection with a New Year’s Day hit-and-run that left a 19-year-old pedestrian with serious injuries, according to Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez.

Matthew Small, of Jersey City, was arrested on Thursday, January 16, by members of the Hudson County Regional Collision Investigation Unit. He faces charges including Knowingly Leaving the Scene of a Motor Vehicle Collision Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury, Assault by Auto, and Endangering an Injured Victim. Small was taken into custody at the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office in Secaucus and later released pending a court appearance on January 30.

The incident occurred shortly before 3 a.m. on January 1 near Communipaw Avenue and Marcy Avenue. Officers responding to the scene found the 19-year-old female victim with a serious upper body injury. The driver of the striking vehicle fled the scene, leaving the victim to be transported to Jersey City Medical Center for treatment.

Prosecutor Suarez credited the Hudson County Regional Collision Investigation Unit and the Jersey City Police Department for their work in the investigation and subsequent arrest.
