Brooklyn teen arrested for murder in Williamsburg shooting

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — An 18-year-old Brooklyn man has been arrested and charged with murder in connection to a fatal shooting that occurred in Williamsburg earlier this year, police said Tuesday.

Edilve Chavez was taken into custody on June 10 at 2:26 p.m. within the confines of the 90th Precinct. Chavez, who resides on South 3rd Street in Brooklyn, faces charges of murder and criminal possession of a weapon.

The arrest stems from a March 11 shooting outside 10 Meserole Street. Police responded to a 911 call at approximately 2:18 p.m. and found 21-year-old Joharis Rivas unresponsive with a gunshot wound to the head. Rivas, who lived on Jamaica Avenue in Brooklyn, was transported by EMS to NYC Health + Hospitals/Elmhurst, where he was pronounced dead.

Ongoing investigation following suspect’s arrest

Details surrounding the circumstances of the shooting and a possible motive have not been released. The investigation into the homicide remains ongoing.
