Baltimore, MD – A retired railroad worker and Army veteran from Silver Spring landed the biggest win of his life after uncovering a $100,000 top prize on a $10 scratch-off ticket he picked up during a routine grocery run.
Clifford Briggs, a longtime Montgomery County resident, stopped at the Safeway supermarket at 11201 Georgia Avenue in Wheaton, bought six Double Your Money scratch-off tickets from a lottery kiosk, and took them home. What started as a casual game turned into a moment of disbelief as he began to realize just how much he’d won.
At first, Briggs believed he hit a $10,000 prize after matching one number. Then another $10,000 appeared. After scratching the full ticket, the total climbed to $100,000 — ten times what he initially thought.
He verified the prize by scanning the ticket at a nearby 7-Eleven and claimed his winnings on August 29 at the Maryland Lottery headquarters in Baltimore.
The win came from the Double Your Money scratch-off, launched in July with 14 top-tier $100,000 prizes. Following this win, 10 of those prizes remain available.
Briggs, a two-time retiree, plans to use the money to pay off his car and save the rest. In retirement, he spends time fishing, golfing, and playing cards with friends.
Safeway will receive a $1,000 bonus for selling the winning ticket.
