Man killed in Jersey City police shooting as state investigation launched
JERSEY CITY, NJ – A man was fatally shot by police Friday afternoon on one of Jersey City’s busiest corridors, prompting an immediate investigation by the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office under a state law mandating independent reviews of deadly law enforcement encounters.
The shooting occurred around 1:23 p.m. along John F. Kennedy Boulevard, where a civilian male suffered fatal injuries during an encounter with police. The identities of both the man and the officers involved have not yet been made public.
The circumstances surrounding what led to the shooting remain under investigation. Officials have not disclosed whether the man was armed, if there was a pursuit involved, or if any officers were injured during the incident.
Under a 2019 state law, any death involving an officer acting in an official capacity must be investigated by the Office of Public Integrity and Accountability within the Attorney General’s Office. The statute also requires that the case be presented to a grand jury, which will decide whether any criminal charges are warranted.
Investigators were seen on the scene for several hours Friday afternoon, blocking off portions of the boulevard as they documented evidence and gathered witness statements. The area has since been reopened.
The Attorney General’s Office stated that no further information would be released at this time while the investigation remains active.
