Fugitive who rammed officer on U Street now in custody
WASHINGTON, DC – A suspect accused of hitting a police officer with a vehicle during an early-morning traffic stop on U Street this summer has been arrested more than two months after the incident, according to the Metropolitan Police Department.
At around 2:00 a.m. on Monday, July 14, Third District officers attempted to pull over a vehicle in the 1300 block of U Street NW. As officers approached the car, the driver suddenly took off, striking one officer and another vehicle while fleeing the scene.
The injured officer was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries and later released. The suspect remained on the run until this week.
On Monday, September 22, MPD officers arrested 27-year-old Izuchukwu Igwe of Upper Marlboro, Maryland, in connection with the attack. He was taken into custody on a D.C. Superior Court warrant and charged with Assault on a Police Officer.
No additional details about what prompted the traffic stop or how the suspect was located have been released. MPD has not announced whether further charges may be pending.
The investigation remains active as detectives work to determine the full circumstances of the case.
