Eight New Jersey pet stores fined $70K for violating pet protection law
Trenton, NJ — Eight pet stores across New Jersey have been fined more than $70,000 for violating the state’s Pet Purchase Protection Act (PPPA), officials announced Thursday.
Attorney General Matthew J. Platkin and the Division of Consumer Affairs said the penalties stem from unannounced inspections at stores in Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Middlesex, Somerset, and Union counties. Investigators found multiple violations at every location, including failure to provide breeding history, medical records, and required consumer rights notices.
Some stores failed to display vaccination records, veterinary examinations, or federal inspection reports for breeders and brokers. Oh My Dog in Kearny was cited for buying puppies from breeders not licensed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
The following stores were issued Notices of Violation and fines:
- Bergen Kennel Inc. (Mama’s and Papa’s Pet Shop), Englewood — $9,538.26
- Silver Nickel Puppies at Troy’s Trims & Treats, Englewood — $7,038.26
- Pet Crew Pet Shop, Newark — $8,504.26
- Oh My Dog LLC, Kearny — $8,079.87
- Carmona Pet Shop Inc., Union City — $7,488.20
- Pet Center Rescue Inc. (Pet Center), Old Bridge — $13,359.30
- Oxford Puppy Group Inc. (Shake A Paw), Green Brook — $10,695.02
- Oxford Puppy Group Inc. (Shake A Paw), Union — $10,744.91
The total assessed penalties and investigative costs amount to $75,448.08.
Under the PPPA, pet stores must provide full transparency on breeders, veterinary care, and consumer rights, while being barred from sourcing animals from unlicensed or disreputable breeders.
