Anne Arundel police warn drivers of fake tags and insurance scams

by Shore News Network

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Police in Anne Arundel County are warning residents to avoid fraudulent businesses selling counterfeit license plates, fake registrations, and bogus insurance cards, saying the scams are spreading through social media and online marketplaces.

Investigators report a growing number of drivers using these unauthorized services, which can lead to steep fines, vehicle impoundment, or even criminal charges. Officials stressed that so-called “unofficial” tags are not recognized by law enforcement, and invalid insurance can leave motorists personally liable if they are involved in a crash.

The department urged drivers to confirm any third-party service through the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration, which maintains a list of licensed tag and title agents on its website. Residents are also encouraged to verify coverage with the Maryland Insurance Administration before purchasing any auto policy.

Authorities say anyone encountering a suspected fraudulent operation should report it to police or the MVA’s Office of Investigations and Internal Affairs.

Police say the safest route for drivers is simple: stick to official channels before getting behind the wheel.
