Syracuse man arrested after pit bull and owner slashed with blade in East Willow Street attack
SYRACUSE, NY – A man is behind bars after a violent attack on both a dog and its owner earlier this month, leaving a pit bull named Chance critically injured and sparking a multi-agency animal abuse investigation.
Syracuse Police were called to the 500 block of East Willow Street on October 21 for a report of a suspicious person with a weapon. When officers arrived, they found Chance, a pit bull, suffering from serious injuries caused by a bladed weapon. The dog was transported to Humane CNY, where it received intensive care and has since made a full recovery.
Investigators later identified 47-year-old Raqueeb Shadreem as the suspect in the attack. Police say Shadreem assaulted both the dog and its owner with a sharp instrument during an altercation inside the residence. Following the investigation, he was taken into custody on October 30.
Shadreem is now facing multiple charges, including assault in the second degree, criminal possession of a weapon in the third degree, and aggravated cruelty to animals. He was booked into the Onondaga County Justice Center following his arrest.
Police did not release additional information about the motive behind the attack or the condition of the dog’s owner. The case remains active as authorities continue reviewing evidence related to the incident.
