Cops find loaded gun and narcotics after suspect flees NY traffic stop
Poughkeepsie, NY – A traffic stop turned into a brief police pursuit Monday afternoon when a Poughkeepsie man attempted to flee officers before crashing into two vehicles and being taken into custody with drugs and a loaded stolen firearm, according to New York State Police.
At approximately 3:35 p.m. on November 17, members of the Troop K Community Stabilization Unit and State Police at Poughkeepsie attempted to pull over a vehicle traveling westbound on Main Street for traffic violations. The driver initially complied but then fled the scene, resulting in a short chase.
The fleeing vehicle sideswiped one occupied car, causing it to strike a second occupied vehicle before finally coming to a stop. The driver, identified as Shamar Parker, 39, of Poughkeepsie, was arrested at the scene. None of the individuals in the impacted vehicles required medical attention, according to police.
A search of Parker and his vehicle led to the discovery of narcotics, drug paraphernalia, and a loaded 9mm handgun reported stolen. Parker now faces a slate of felony and misdemeanor charges, including:

- Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance 5th Degree (Class D felony)
- Criminal Possession of a Firearm (Class E felony)
- Criminal Possession of Stolen Property 4th Degree (Class E felony)

- Unlawful Fleeing a Police Officer in a Motor Vehicle 3rd Degree (Class A misdemeanor)

Parker was arraigned in City of Poughkeepsie Court and remanded to the Dutchess County Justice and Transition Center.
