Online extortion scam hits Cherry Hill community

Scammers using fake social media profiles to extort Cherry Hill residents, police warn

CHERRY HILL, NJ — A new online scam is targeting Cherry Hill residents through fake social media profiles and threatening messages, according to a warning issued Wednesday by the Cherry Hill Police Department.

The scheme involves individuals creating fraudulent accounts to impersonate others or fabricate compromising situations, then contacting victims and demanding money under the threat of exposure or harm. Authorities say the scammers are using fear tactics to pressure residents into paying to avoid false accusations or reputational damage.

Police urge residents not to engage with suspicious messages and not to send money under any circumstances. Instead, victims are advised to report any such incidents to the department’s non-emergency line at (856) 665-1200 so that cases can be documented and investigated appropriately.

The department did not specify how many reports have been received but confirmed that the scam has reached multiple community members in recent days. No arrests have been announced in connection with the ongoing investigation.

Officials credit vigilant residents for helping bring the issue to light and remind the public to use caution when interacting with unfamiliar online accounts or private messages.
