Galloway officers rescue man from burning home in early morning Smithville fire
Galloway Township, NJ – Two Galloway Township police officers pulled double duty as volunteer firefighters early Wednesday morning, rescuing a man from a burning home just before flames consumed the structure.
The fire broke out around 3:52 a.m. on the 100 block of Waterview Drive in the Smithville section of Galloway Township, according to the Galloway Township Police Department. Responding officers quickly identified the source of the blaze as firefighters from multiple agencies arrived to assist.
Among the first responders were Officer Nicholas Stewart and Officer John Parker—both serving as volunteer firefighters with the Oceanville Fire Company. Upon arrival, the two entered the residence and located the homeowner, who was still inside.
The officers managed to pull the victim from the burning structure, and he was immediately transported to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center – City Campus, where he remains in intensive care.
Several fire departments assisted in controlling the scene, while the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office is now leading the investigation into the cause of the fire. No additional injuries were reported, and the identity of the homeowner has not been released.
Agencies remained at the scene through the morning as investigators continued their work.
