Christmas night chaos as Hamilton man fires at cops

Hamilton domestic dispute ends with suspect firing at officers and facing attempted murder charge

Hamilton Township, NJ – A Christmas night domestic call on North Street escalated into a tense standoff when a man allegedly fired a handgun inside his home and later shot in the direction of responding officers before being taken into custody without injuries.

The incident unfolded around 9:16 p.m. on the 500 block of North Street after a woman reported that her husband, Stephen Pofi, 69, of Mays Landing, was armed with both a knife and a handgun and had discharged the firearm before officers arrived. The woman was able to leave the residence safely, and no one was injured during the initial gunfire.

After officers arrived, a perimeter was established and attempts were made to communicate with Pofi. According to investigators, he refused commands and fired the handgun again, this time toward law enforcement personnel. No officers were struck, and the situation ended with Pofi being taken into custody without further incident.

Following the investigation, Pofi was charged with attempted murder, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, aggravated assault with a firearm, obstruction, harassment, and resisting arrest. He is expected to be lodged at the Atlantic County Justice Facility after medical clearance at AtlantiCare.

Authorities noted that the charges are accusations and that Pofi is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
