Two former NYPD officers sentenced in Bronx sex abuse case involving intoxicated woman

Bronx, NY — A late-night outing in the Bronx ended in a criminal case that stripped two New York City police officers of their badges and led to probation sentences after prosecutors said they sexually abused an intoxicated woman who could not give consent.

Former NYPD officers Julio Alcantara-Santiago, 42, and Christian Garcia, 34, were sentenced Friday in Bronx Supreme Court following guilty pleas connected to the assault, according to the Bronx District Attorney’s Office. One of the men will be required to register as a sex offender under state law.

Alcantara-Santiago was sentenced to six years of probation and must register under the State Sex Offender Registration Act while completing a sex offender treatment program. He pleaded guilty to second-degree sexual abuse. Garcia received one year of probation and was ordered to participate in a sex offender treatment program after pleading guilty to third-degree sexual abuse.

Prosecutors said the incident occurred during the early morning hours of July 9, 2023, after the defendants drank alcohol with the victim at a Bronx nightspot. Surveillance video showed the woman heavily intoxicated and being physically assisted by both men as they left the venue and entered the apartment building where Alcantara-Santiago lived.

The victim sought medical treatment the following morning. Testing later identified DNA from both men, with a larger percentage attributed to Alcantara-Santiago.

Both defendants were terminated from the NYPD prior to sentencing. The case was investigated with assistance from the NYPD Internal Affairs Bureau and the Bronx Special Victims Squad and prosecuted by the Bronx District Attorney’s Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Bureau.

The court proceedings were overseen by Bronx Supreme Court Justice Ralph Fabrizio.
