Wrinkled 5 dollar bill leads to grandma to Ohio jackpot

Northfield woman turns wrinkled 5 dollar bill into 250000 dollar jackpot surprise

NORTHFIELD, OH – A Northfield woman who switched stores and swapped out a wrinkled 5 dollar bill ended up uncovering a 250000 dollar scratch-off prize days later, calling the unexpected turn of events meant to be.

The winner initially cashed in several smaller winning scratch-off tickets at a grocery store and planned to use her 25 dollars in winnings to purchase more. After deciding not to wait for a lottery machine being used by another customer, she left without buying additional tickets.

On her way home, she stopped at Sagamore Quik Check, located at 263 West Aurora Road in Northfield, known for its variety of scratch-off games. She inserted a 20 dollar bill into the machine and selected several tickets. When she attempted to use a wrinkled 5 dollar bill, the machine would not accept it.

Rather than exchange the bill, she chose to purchase a 5 dollar Jackpot Party Scratch-Off ticket from behind the counter.

She placed the tickets in her vehicle’s glove compartment and did not check them for three days. When she later scratched the Jackpot Party ticket, she revealed a 250000 dollar top prize.

After federal and state taxes totaling 26.75 percent, she will receive 183125 dollars. As of Feb. 18, five top prizes remain in the Jackpot Party game.

The winner said she plans to use the prize money to treat her grandchildren and hopes to take them to Disney next year.

Since 1974, the Ohio Lottery has contributed more than 34 billion dollars to education.
