Gaithersburg nurse hits $50,000 jackpot while pumping gas in Bethesda

GAITHERSBURG, MD – A routine stop for gas after work turned into a $50,000 payday for a Gaithersburg woman who scratched off a winning ticket at the pump.

The healthcare professional claimed her $50,000 second-tier prize on Feb. 19 at Maryland Lottery headquarters in Baltimore after playing the $10 scratch-off game 50X the Cash.

According to lottery officials, the winner typically purchases scratch-offs once a week, often on Fridays after her shift. On the day of her win, she stopped at the Shell station at 10211 Westlake Drive in Bethesda to refuel and bought 10 tickets for 50X the Cash.

She began scratching the tickets while pumping gas and suspected one might be a winner. To confirm, she went inside the store to scan them. Two tickets were winners, including one worth $50,000.

The winner has shared the news with family and plans to invest part of the prize while using the remainder to help loved ones with expenses.

The 50X the Cash game launched Jan. 9 with nine $100,000 top prizes, six of which remain unclaimed. Of the 10 second-tier $50,000 prizes, seven remained unclaimed as of her claim date.
