Newark fire captain marks 100th birthday as department honors decorated WWII veteran

NEWARK, NJ – A retired Newark fire captain who served his country in World War II and spent more than three decades protecting the city reached a milestone Friday as firefighters gathered to celebrate his 100th birthday.

Newark Fire Chief Del Ortiz led a team of firefighters to the Cranford home of retired Fire Captain Theodore Popovich on Friday, February 20, to mark the occasion.

Popovich began his career with the City of Newark on December 16, 1949, when he joined the Newark Fire Division as a firefighter. Prior to that, he served in the U.S. Army beginning in 1944, including deployment in Germany during World War II.

During his military service, Popovich earned the Purple Heart, the Bronze Star and the New Jersey Distinguished Service Medal.

He was promoted to the rank of fire captain on February 14, 1967, and continued serving the city until his retirement on May 1, 1982.

The Newark Department of Public Safety recognized Popovich for his service to both the nation and the City of Newark as he celebrated his centennial milestone.
