Frederick County case highlights misuse of personal data to target victim
Frederick, MD – A Thurmont man will serve a lengthy prison sentence after admitting to using a woman’s personal information to solicit strangers for sex at her home, according to prosecutors in Frederick County.
John P. Davis, 44, was sentenced Friday to a total of 20 years, with all but 10 years suspended, after pleading guilty to using personal identifying information to encourage another to commit a sexual crime. He was also sentenced to an additional 10 years for violating probation tied to a prior assault involving the same victim.
Fraudulent posts led strangers to victim’s home
Investigators said the case began in January 2024 when deputies uncovered fraudulent Craigslist ads impersonating the victim. The posts included her name, photos, address, and phone number, and invited individuals to come to her home for sex.
“The postings could have resulted in any type of criminal coming to my home,” the victim stated in an impact statement.

Judge cites public safety concerns
Authorities said the posts were paid for using the defendant’s credit card, and video evidence showed him admitting to creating them. The victim reported receiving numerous harassing messages and calls as a result.
“This is hideous. You need a significant change in whatever it is your mindset is…. The public is not safe with you walking the streets,” said Judge Julia Martz-Fisher during sentencing.
State’s Attorney Charlie Smith added, “The defendant’s actions invaded the victim’s privacy, dignity, and sense of safety.”
Upon release, Davis will be required to serve five years of supervised probation, with conditions including no contact with the victim, mental health treatment, and a psycho-sexual evaluation.
