Vallejo parents sentenced to 22 years to life in death of 16-year-old daughter

A teenage girl’s death inside a makeshift trailer in the Antelope Valley has led to life sentences for her parents, closing a case that detailed hours of abuse and a failed attempt to conceal it.

LOS ANGELES, CA – Oriana Elias, 38, and Vincent Gibbs, 39, both of Vallejo, were sentenced Wednesday to 22 years to life in prison for the August 2021 torture and killing of their 16-year-old daughter, Pearlene V. The sentencing followed a jury’s convictions last month on multiple felony counts tied to the girl’s death.

“This sentence reflects an unthinkable betrayal by parents who are meant to protect their children from harm,” Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman said. “Pearlene was denied the chance to grow up and become who she was meant to be. There is no punishment that can restore the loss of life. I am grateful to Deputy District Attorneys Suzanna Friedman and Diane Hong for their diligence, compassion and resolve to ensure that the victim received justice and the defendants were held fully accountable.”

Convictions and sentencing details

Elias and Gibbs were sentenced April 2 by Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Scott Yang at the Michael Antonovich Antelope Valley Courthouse in case 25AVCF00536.

On March 17, a jury found Oriana Estela Elias guilty of one count of second-degree murder, one count of torture, one count of child abuse, and two counts of dissuading a witness from reporting a crime. Jurors also found true an allegation that she caused great bodily injury.

Vincent Gibbs was convicted the same day of one count of second-degree murder, one count of torture, and one count of child abuse. The jury found true allegations that he caused great bodily injury and used a weapon during the crime.

Abuse inside trailer led to teen’s death

Prosecutors said the fatal abuse occurred on Aug. 15, 2021, after the parents became upset with Pearlene over text messages sent to teenage boys. As punishment, the teen was forced to perform strenuous exercises in extreme heat before being beaten for hours with a wooden plank and a belt.

The abuse was witnessed by the victim’s sisters. At some point during the ordeal, Pearlene collapsed and died inside a makeshift bathroom in a trailer where the family was living. The trailer did not have running water or electricity.

Before paramedics arrived, Elias instructed the victim’s sisters to lie about what had happened and not tell authorities or emergency responders.

The case was prosecuted by Deputy District Attorneys Suzanna Friedman and Diane Hong of the Family Violence Division’s Antelope Valley Branch. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Homicide Bureau led the investigation.
