Weekly community walks aim to reconnect residents and officers this spring.

BOSTON, MA – A community policing initiative launched in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic is returning to the streets of West Roxbury and Roslindale this week, as officers from District E-5 begin a new round of “Walk the Beat” gatherings designed to bring residents and police together in a more informal setting.

The program, held outdoors and open to all fitness levels, invites neighbors to join officers on weekly walks through local areas, offering a chance to engage in conversation, build relationships, and encourage community activity as warmer weather arrives.

Program details and community focus

The “Walk the Beat” initiative was first introduced following the pandemic as a way to help seniors and other residents reconnect after extended isolation. Organizers say the program has since grown into a broader effort to strengthen ties between officers and the neighborhoods they serve while promoting physical activity.

District E-5’s walks will take place every Monday at 10:00 a.m. at Millennium Park Playground Lot C. Participation is open to all residents, regardless of walking ability, and no prior registration is required.

Officials say the walks are intended to create a consistent and approachable environment where residents can interact with officers outside of emergency situations, fostering familiarity and trust.

Residents interested in joining the program in West Roxbury or Roslindale can attend the weekly sessions directly or seek additional information through their local Community Service Office. Contact details for each district are available on the Boston Police Department’s website.
