Gaithersburg, MD — A single-vehicle crash in the early morning hours Sunday left a Silver Spring man dead after his SUV overturned along a major roadway, prompting an ongoing investigation into what caused the vehicle to veer off course.

Emergency crews were called around 1:17 a.m. to Georgia Avenue near Randolph Road following reports of a rollover collision. Responders arrived to find a tan 2011 Cadillac Escalade overturned in the roadway.

Investigators determined the SUV had been traveling northbound when it left the roadway, striking a curb, a concrete retaining wall, and a wooden utility pole before coming to rest upside down.

The driver, identified as 33-year-old Cristhian Francisco Trejo Portillo of Silver Spring, was found trapped inside the vehicle and unresponsive. He was extricated from the wreckage and pronounced dead at the scene.

Detectives with the Montgomery County Police Collision Reconstruction Unit are leading the investigation, which officials say could take weeks to months to complete.
