Mother son duo hit $50,000 scratch-off win after $30 gamble in Maryland
Upper Marlboro, MD — A routine stop at a convenience store turned into a $50,000 lottery win after a mother and son decided to try a higher-priced scratch-off ticket for the first time.
The pair purchased a $30 Ace of Spades scratch-off at the Wawa located at 163 South East Crain Highway in Prince George’s County. The mother, who typically plays lower-priced tickets, said it was her first time buying a $30 game.
After scratching the ticket together, the duo initially uncovered multiple smaller prizes totaling $500. It wasn’t until they revealed the multiplier that the full value became clear. A 100X symbol boosted the total winnings to $50,000.
The son, who selected the ticket after being drawn to its design, used a calculator to tally the initial amounts before realizing additional value remained hidden. The pair claimed the prize Wednesday at Maryland Lottery headquarters.
They have not finalized plans for the winnings, stating they wanted to confirm the prize before making any decisions.
The Ace of Spades scratch-off launched in September with three $2 million top prizes, two of which remain unclaimed. The Upper Marlboro win marks the second $50,000 prize claimed in the game, leaving one remaining at that prize level.
