Prosecutors say 15-year-old opened fire on NYPD officers

Prosecutors say a 15-year-old allegedly fired multiple shots at a vehicle carrying two New York City police officers in the Rockaways

QUEENS, N.Y. — A 15-year-old boy has been charged with attempted murder after prosecutors say he opened fire on an unmarked NYPD vehicle carrying two police officers in Queens, triggering a confrontation that ended with his arrest moments later.

The teenager, who is from Edgemere, was arraigned on multiple felony charges stemming from the Tuesday night shooting, according to Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz.

Prosecutors allege the incident occurred at approximately 10:20 p.m. on Almeda Avenue near Beach 58th Street in Edgemere. An NYPD detective and sergeant were traveling westbound in an unmarked police vehicle when the car was struck by multiple gunshots.

According to the criminal complaint, the officers exited the vehicle after the shooting and apprehended the alleged gunman. Investigators later recovered two 9 mm shell casings from the area where the shots were fired.

No injuries were reported.

The teenager is charged with:

  • Two counts of attempted murder in the second degree
  • Two counts of attempted assault in the first degree
  • Two counts of attempted aggravated assault upon a police officer or peace officer
  • Two counts of criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree
  • Reckless endangerment in the first degree

District Attorney Katz said prosecutors allege the teen acted with another individual who has not yet been apprehended.

During arraignment proceedings, Queens Criminal Court Judge Indira Khan ordered the defendant to return to court, and Supreme Court Justice Bruna DiBiase continued remand. The teen is scheduled to appear in court again Monday.

If convicted, he faces up to 10 years in prison.

District Attorney Katz said the officers were able to identify and apprehend the suspect despite coming under what prosecutors described as potentially deadly gunfire.

The investigation remains ongoing.
