Detectives arrest 54-year-old suspect more than a month after Southwest Baltimore gunfire

BALTIMORE, MD — A Baltimore man has been arrested and charged with attempted first-degree murder in connection with a June shooting that left another man wounded in Southwest Baltimore, according to police.

The Baltimore Police Department announced that detectives arrested Leonard Owens, 54, of Baltimore, in connection with the June 20 shooting in the 300 block of North Gilmor Street.

Police said Owens was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Central Booking Intake Facility, where he was charged with attempted first-degree murder.

The shooting occurred at approximately 5:19 p.m. on June 20 after Southwest District officers responded to a ShotSpotter alert in the 300 block of North Gilmor Street.

When officers arrived, they found a 36-year-old man suffering from a gunshot wound to the leg.

The victim was transported to an area hospital, where police said his injuries were believed to be non-life-threatening.

During the initial investigation, detectives took a person of interest into custody for questioning. Following further investigation, Owens was identified as the suspect and arrested.

The charges against Owens are allegations, and he is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
