JERSEY CITY, N.J. — A Jersey City man has been charged with murder in connection with a fatal shooting that authorities say stemmed from a domestic dispute at an apartment building on Cornelison Avenue.

Hudson County Prosecutor Wayne Mello announced Thursday that members of the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Unit arrested 25-year-old Jalil Harley of Jersey City in connection with the death of Omar Smith, 38.

Harley has been charged with murder, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and unlawful possession of a weapon.

According to prosecutors, shortly after 8 p.m. Tuesday, the Jersey City Police Department responded to a report of an injured man inside an apartment at 200 Cornelison Avenue.

When officers arrived, they found Smith unresponsive with apparent gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators have classified the case as a domestic dispute.

Harley was arrested Thursday at the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office in Secaucus without incident. He was transported to the Hudson County Correctional Facility, where he is being held pending his first court appearance.
