Police say 43-year-old was also carrying suspected drug paraphernalia when officers caught him
CUMBERLAND, MD – A Cumberland man wanted on four probation warrants allegedly took off running when officers moved in to arrest him Thursday, triggering a short foot chase that ended with him in custody and facing a new series of charges.
Cumberland Police identified the man as William Morgan Stewart Sr., 43.
Officers spotted Stewart walking near Virginia Avenue and knew he was wanted on four active bench warrants, according to the department.
Police said all four warrants were issued by the Allegany County District Court.
The warrants allege Stewart violated probation stemming from previous convictions involving theft, controlled dangerous substances and trespassing.
When officers approached Stewart and told him he was under arrest, he allegedly fled on foot.
Police pursued him and took him into custody after what the department described as a short chase.
Officers said they also found suspected controlled dangerous substance paraphernalia in Stewart’s possession when he was apprehended.
Stewart faces four counts related to violation-of-probation bench warrants along with resisting arrest, failure to obey, disorderly conduct, obstructing and hindering, and possession of CDS paraphernalia.
He appeared before a District Court Commissioner and was remanded to the Allegany County Detention Center.
Police said Stewart was being held without bond.
The new charges are accusations, and Stewart is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
