SALISBURY, MD — Eighteen dogs, including puppies and adult Springer Spaniel mixes, were removed from a Salisbury property this week after animal control officers reported finding animals in poor condition and living among unsanitary conditions.
Animal Control of Wicomico County began investigating after receiving a complaint Aug. 29 about numerous dogs at a property in the 300 block of West Naylor Mill Road. Because of the number of animals reported, the agency assembled additional personnel and resources before responding.
Officers arrived at the property at about 11:50 a.m. Sept. 1 and found two residents inside a shed with two adult dogs. Other dogs were running loose outside.
“The dogs were observed to be living in unsanitary conditions, and many appeared to be in poor physical condition,” Animal Control said.
The Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office, county Code Enforcement and City of Salisbury Animal Control were called to assist. A search of the residence turned up more dogs, many of which were underweight, officials said.
Seventeen dogs were removed that day. Officers trapped another dog Sept. 2, raising the total to 18. Four remain loose, and authorities are working to capture them safely.
The animals were taken to the Humane Society of Wicomico County for veterinary examinations, treatment and food. They may be offered for adoption after they are medically cleared.
The Humane Society is accepting monetary donations to cover food, medication, veterinary treatment and other expenses related to the animals’ recovery.
No arrests or charges had been announced as of the Sept. 3 release. Animal Control said the investigation remains open.
