Three Teens Charged in Hate Crime Against Elderly Man in Chelsea

NEW YORK, NY – As part of an ongoing hate crime assault investigation, the New York City Police Department (NYPD) arrested three male juveniles on Manhattan’s Lower West Side on Monday, October 9, 2023, around 9:40 a.m.

A 16-year-old male, a 13-year-old male, and a 14-year-old male have all been charged with Gang Assault, Hate Crime – Assault, and Criminal Possession of a Weapon.

In a separate incident, the NYPD is actively seeking the public’s help to identify and locate individuals linked to a hate crime assault in the 10th Precinct. This occurred on Friday, September 15, 2023, at about 10:15 p.m. A 72-year-old male was near West 17th Street and 9th Avenue when he was accosted by four unidentified males. These individuals uttered anti-LGBTQIA+ slurs before launching a physical assault, hitting and kicking the victim and striking him with objects.

After the assault, they fled on foot and were last spotted entering 420 West 19th Street. The elderly victim, who suffered a fractured jaw and facial and hand lacerations, received medical treatment at a local hospital. The individuals sought in relation to this assault are described as one heavyset male with a light complexion and three slim males with a medium complexion.

The NYPD is encouraging anyone with information about these incidents to assist in their investigations.
