Akron Police Remind Residents of Safe Exchange Zone Following Facebook Marketplace Robberies

August 28, 2024

AKRON, Ohio — In response to two recent Facebook Marketplace robberies, the Akron Police Department is urging residents to utilize the department’s “Safe Exchange Zone” when buying or selling items online. The reminder was issued on social media by the Akron Police Department earlier today.

The Safe Exchange Zone is located in the lobby of the Akron Police Department at 217 S. High Street. The area is designed to provide a secure environment for transactions and child custody exchanges, offering peace of mind to those concerned about their personal safety. The zone is under 24-hour surveillance and is staffed by a uniformed police officer, although the officer will not mediate or participate in transactions unless a criminal issue arises. Individuals entering the station are screened through a metal detector to ensure no concealed weapons are brought inside.

The Akron Police Department encourages the public to take advantage of this safe zone, especially following the recent incidents. The department noted that certain items, such as weapons, drugs, and alcohol, are not permitted for exchange within the zone.

For those unable to use the Safe Exchange Zone, the Akron Police have provided several safety tips for conducting online transactions. These include meeting in public places, avoiding secluded areas, and conducting exchanges during daylight hours. The department also advises against going alone, inviting strangers into your home, or entering theirs. Trusting your instincts and informing a friend or family member about your plans are additional precautions suggested.

Residents are reminded to exercise caution and prioritize their safety when engaging in person-to-person exchanges arranged online.
