Alert Community Members and Police Prevent Potential School Incident

PITTSBURGH, PA – Quick action from community members and Pittsburgh Police averted a possible dangerous situation at Westinghouse Academy when a suspicious vehicle was reported circling the school.

Multiple police units from Zone 5 responded to the alert on September 15 after a bus driver and a parent informed Pittsburgh Public School Police about a grey SUV driving around the area. The vehicle contained at least three masked males.

Pittsburgh Police located the described vehicle speeding and driving recklessly near the school. Officers pulled the vehicle over at the intersection of Frankstown Ave. and Washington Blvd. All three males were detained and the vehicle, later identified as stolen, was searched. Officers found a firearm, a spent shell casing, a gas canister, and a large cloth wick—materials commonly used in arson or violent crimes.

Two of the three juveniles were arrested and are facing multiple charges including receiving stolen property, unlawful firearm possession, driving without a license, possession of incendiary devices, and reckless driving. The third juvenile was released to the custody of a guardian.
