Amato and Polistina push bill to lower utility costs for volunteer first responders

TRENTON, NJ – New Jersey Senators Carmen Amato Jr. (R–Ocean) and Vince Polistina (R–Atlantic) have introduced legislation aimed at easing the financial strain on volunteer emergency service organizations by reducing their utility rates.

The proposed bill would require public utilities to charge volunteer fire departments, rescue squads, and other emergency service organizations residential service rates rather than higher commercial rates, which the senators say have driven many volunteer operations to the brink of financial hardship.

“Volunteer first responders are integral to the public safety of our communities, yet many of these organizations are being pushed to the brink financially by skyrocketing utility costs,” Amato said. “This legislation ensures they are charged the lowest possible rates so they can stay focused on saving lives, not worrying about keeping the lights on.”

Polistina said volunteer fire and rescue organizations, already stretched thin by staffing and equipment costs, should not be treated like for-profit businesses. “Requiring public utilities to charge a residential rate is a fair and responsible way to provide meaningful relief,” he said. “It helps ensure these vital organizations remain operational for the people who depend on them.”

The senators said they developed the measure after meeting with volunteer departments in their districts who reported struggling to pay basic operating expenses as energy costs rise statewide.
