Gun-wielding man shot by Akron officer after allegedly pointing weapon at crowd

AKRON, OH — An intoxicated man reportedly armed with a gun was shot by a police officer Tuesday night after he allegedly pointed the weapon at multiple people during a chaotic scene in a parking lot on Albrecht Avenue, authorities said.

The incident unfolded around 9:03 p.m. in the 2700 block of Albrecht Avenue, where Akron Police officers were dispatched in response to a fight. Witnesses told officers that a man in the parking lot was drunk and waving a firearm, allegedly aiming it at bystanders.

When officers arrived on the scene, one officer confronted the armed man. According to police, the officer discharged his weapon moments later, striking the individual. Officers provided medical assistance at the scene until paramedics arrived.

The man was transported to a local hospital with serious injuries. His identity has not been released.

The officer involved in the shooting has been placed on paid administrative leave, which is standard protocol. He has four years of law enforcement experience, with the past year served at the Akron Police Department.

The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is now leading the case. Once completed, the investigation will be reviewed by the Ohio Attorney General’s Office and then presented to a Summit County grand jury. The Akron Police Office of Professional Standards and Accountability will also conduct an internal review, with results to be shared with the police chief and the city’s police auditor.

The incident remains under active investigation. No additional details have been released.
