BAYONNE, N.J. — Members of the Bayonne Police Department gathered Thursday to salute the funeral procession of retired Lieutenant Owen Ballweg, a decorated Marine Corps veteran and longtime city officer.

Ballweg, who passed away this week, was recognized for his military service during the Korean War, where he was wounded in combat and received two Purple Hearts. He survived the Battle of the Chosin Reservoir, a grueling conflict that earned him distinction as one of the “Chosin Few.”

After his military service, Ballweg joined the Bayonne Police Department, serving for more than 38 years. He rose through the ranks to lieutenant and retired in 1994.

“Today, members of the police department stood in solemn tribute,” the department stated on Facebook.

Ballweg’s contributions were recognized both for his service overseas and his long-standing role in local law enforcement.

The department cited his legacy of “courage, sacrifice, and commitment to both his country and community.”
