Beloved Middletown Schools to Shut Down Due to District Budget and Financial Problems

District leaders say the move will save millions annually as enrollment declines and costs rise.

Middletown, NJ – The Middletown Township Board of Education voted Thursday night to close three schools as part of a restructuring plan aimed at addressing declining enrollment and a growing long-term budget deficit.

Under the plan approved by the board, Leonardo Elementary School, Navesink Elementary School, and Bayshore Middle School will close as individual schools. Students from Leonardo and Navesink will be moved into the current Bayshore Middle School building, which will be converted into an elementary school and renamed Bayshore Elementary School.

Key Points

  • Middletown will close Leonardo Elementary, Navesink Elementary, and Bayshore Middle School.
  • Leonardo and Navesink students will move into the Bayshore building, which will become Bayshore Elementary School.
  • The district says consolidation could save $3.5 million to $4 million annually.

The restructuring will also shift middle school students currently attending Bayshore to two remaining middle schools in the district—Thorne Middle School and Thompson Middle School.

District officials said the consolidation will reduce the number of school buildings the district must maintain while aligning resources with declining enrollment trends.

District cites budget pressures and aging facilities

School officials said the district faces a structural budget deficit that could exceed $13 million by the 2029–2030 school year if major changes are not made.

Administrators also pointed to rising maintenance costs associated with aging school buildings as a factor in the decision to consolidate facilities.

By closing the three schools and reorganizing the district’s structure, officials estimate the district could save between $3.5 million and $4 million annually.

Following the restructuring, Middletown’s school system will consist of 10 elementary schools feeding into two middle schools—Thorne and Thompson.

Timeline for closures and restructuring

The board approved the closures earlier this year, with the district planning to begin the transition process during the 2026–2027 school year. Construction and facility modifications may take place as the Bayshore building is converted into an elementary school.

The district released a public outline of the plan over the weekend detailing the consolidation and redistricting changes.

Community response and concerns

The proposal has generated significant opposition from some parents and residents, including protests and petitions calling on the district to reconsider the closures.

Opponents have raised concerns about potential overcrowding in remaining schools and safety issues related to larger student populations.

School officials have said the consolidation plan is necessary to stabilize the district’s finances while maintaining educational services across Middletown Township.
