Beloved Ocean County law dog passes away

TOMS RIVER, NJ – The Ocean County Sheriff’s Office is mourning the loss of one of its most trusted and recognizable service dogs, K9 Gertrude, a bloodhound who spent six years tracking missing persons and suspects before retiring in 2019. She passed away this week at the age of 14.

Gertrude served with distinction as part of the sheriff’s K9 Unit, known for her remarkable scent-tracking abilities that led to numerous successful search operations across Ocean County. Deputies described her as a loyal and driven partner who never hesitated to take on the next mission, no matter the weather or terrain.

After her retirement, Gertrude was adopted by Robert Krohn, an Ocean County EMS coordinator and firefighter, who gave her a quiet, comfortable home life following her years of public service. “She went from a life of duty to one filled with love and rest,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement.

Gertrude was a familiar face at community events, especially K9 demonstrations and safety fairs, where children often lined up for a chance to meet the department’s gentle giant. Her handlers and colleagues remembered her as both a dedicated working dog and a symbol of compassion within the department.

“She helped save lives and brought closure to families,” one officer said. “There will never be another quite like her.”
