TRENTON, NJ – After surpassing the 50,000 breakthrough case milestone just seven days ago, today New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy reported an additional 4,000 new cases today.

In general, their symptoms might be less and the severity of their COVID-19 infection could be milder than those who are unvaccinated, the truth remains that a fair amount of fully vaccinated New Jerseyans are still getting COVID-19 and the rate is climbing as the weather turns colder.

Last Monday, 50,762 fully vaccinated New Jerseyans, roughly 1% of all vaccinated individuals in the state had contracted the COVID-19 virus. Today, Murphy reported 54,260 breakthrough cases during his now weekly COVID-19 address.

14 more fully vaccinated New Jerseyans have died in the past 7 days according to the figures released today by the governor.

This comes as fears of a new, more contagious variant of the virus is spreading around the world, the omicron variant. According to the South African doctor who sounded the alert, omicron so far appears to be more contagious, but a weaker strain of the COVID-19 virus.

While the majority of new cases and deaths involve unvaccinated New Jersey residents, the data shows that even the fully vaccinated are still at risk. The governor did not break down the age groups and demographics of the outbreak cases.
