Queens, NY – A 22-year-old Briarwood man who was shot four times by an NYPD officer during a confrontation inside his family home has now been indicted by a Queens grand jury on charges of attempted assault and weapon possession.
Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz announced that Jabez Chakraborty was arraigned before Queens Supreme Court Justice Jessica Earle-Gargan on an indictment charging him with attempted assault in the first degree and criminal possession of a weapon in the fourth degree.
If convicted, Chakraborty faces up to 15 years in prison. Justice Earle-Gargan ordered him to return to court March 11.
According to prosecutors, the incident occurred January 26 at approximately 10:25 a.m., after a relative placed a 911 call reporting that the defendant was throwing glass inside the family’s Briarwood residence.
When officers arrived, they were allowed inside by a family member and encountered Chakraborty in the kitchen. Authorities allege he grabbed a large kitchen knife and began walking toward the officers.

Confrontation inside family home
District Attorney Katz said that as the defendant advanced, he allegedly flipped the blade upside down and wound his right arm back. An officer backed away and closed a door separating the foyer from the living room, using it as a shield.
Prosecutors allege Chakraborty pushed through the door and continued advancing. The officer then fired four shots, striking him.
The defendant was transported to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center, where he has been receiving treatment since the incident.
In a statement, Katz said her office is “duty-bound to follow the facts, evidence and circumstances where they lead,” noting that the case includes a mental health component. She added that prosecutorial decisions must be deliberate and informed by mental health expertise while maintaining public safety in Queens.
