Man sentenced after violent shooting of former partner
Bronx, NY – A man who tracked down his former girlfriend outside her apartment and shot her multiple times as she tried to escape has been sentenced to 15 years in prison, closing a case that left the victim with bullets still lodged in her body.
Charles Murray, 41, of the Bronx, was sentenced April 30 after pleading guilty to attempted murder in the second degree, according to the Bronx District Attorney’s Office.
Prosecutors said the shooting happened on February 6, 2024, at approximately 3:54 p.m. outside the victim’s apartment building. Murray approached his ex-girlfriend, identified as Laura Vega, and confronted her about another man.
During the encounter, Murray pulled a firearm from his coat and opened fire as Vega attempted to run. She was struck in the back and neck before collapsing to the ground.
Authorities said Murray then stood over her and shot her in the face.
Vega was transported to NYC Health + Hospitals Lincoln, where she survived her injuries. Officials said she has since recovered, though bullets remain lodged in her body.
Murray pleaded guilty on March 20 and was sentenced by Bronx Supreme Court Justice Audrey Stone to 15 years in prison, followed by five years of post-release supervision.
The case was prosecuted by the Bronx District Attorney’s Office Domestic Violence Bureau.
