BROOKLYN, N.Y. — A Brooklyn woman was arrested Friday after a 6-year-old girl was found unconscious and later pronounced dead at a hospital, police said.

Officers responded to a 911 call at approximately 1:29 p.m. at a residence near Elton Street and Ridgewood Avenue in East New York. Upon arrival, they found the child unresponsive inside the home.

Emergency medical personnel transported the girl to Brookdale Hospital Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.

Following an investigation, police arrested 26-year-old Karla Espinal of Brooklyn. She was charged with second-degree assault for recklessly causing serious physical injury, acting in a manner injurious to a child under 17, and second-degree reckless endangerment.

Authorities have not yet released details on the circumstances surrounding the child’s death. The investigation remains ongoing.
