CAMDEN, NJ – The Attorney General’s Office is conducting an investigation of a fatal motor vehicle accident last night in Camden in which a police vehicle struck and fatally injured a pedestrian.

According to the preliminary investigation, an on-duty, uniformed officer of the Camden County Metro Police Department was operating a marked patrol vehicle southbound on Mount Ephraim Avenue at approximately 10:55 p.m., when he struck the pedestrian, a Camden woman who was crossing Mount Ephraim Avenue at Woodlynne Avenue. The officer was not responding to any police alert at the time of the accident. The officer immediately stopped and radioed for assistance. The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene at approximately 11:09 p.m. The identity of the decedent is not being released at this time.

This investigation is being conducted pursuant to a law enacted in January 2019, P.L.2019, c.1, which requires that the Attorney General’s Office conduct investigations of a person’s death that occurs during an encounter with a law enforcement officer acting in the officer’s official capacity or while the decedent is in custody.
