Neurosurgeon sues hospital after 12-month-old patient’s tragic death
FLINT, Mich. — A neurosurgeon is taking legal action against Hurley Medical Center, claiming retaliation after he raised concerns about patient safety following the death of a 12-month-old child. Dr. Sudesh Ebenezer filed a lawsuit in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan last Monday.
Dr. Ebenezer contends that he was removed from his position on the Neurosurgery Trauma Panel and call schedule after the incident in December 2022. His complaint alleges that the hospital staff “lost track” of the child, who sustained a traumatic head injury, leading to his demise.
The lawsuit states that on the evening of December 9, 2022, Dr. Ebenezer was summoned to assist in treating the child, only to learn that the surgery was canceled due to a supposed medical evacuation. The child, however, remained at Hurley, and staff failed to locate him.
Dr. Ebenezer reported that during this critical time, essential diagnostic tests were not performed. This inaction allegedly prevented him from being able to operate on the child immediately, which may have contributed to the outcome.
“Hurley staff failed to obtain a CT scan of the child’s head despite being advised to do so,” the complaint states, underscoring a series of missed protocols that Dr. Ebenezer discussed with various Hurley employees before the child’s death on December 10, 2022.
In the suit, Dr. Ebenezer claims Hurley shifted the blame for the incident onto him to silence his complaints. He alleges that his first amendment rights were violated, and his contract with the Shah Practice Group was breached, leading to significant financial and reputational harm.
Following the incident, he received a letter from Hurley’s trauma medical director that claimed his actions raised “patient safety and quality of care concerns.” Dr. Ebenezer is seeking compensatory damages for earnings lost and injunctive relief.
A spokesperson for Hurley Medical Center did not respond to a request for comment about the lawsuit.
Dr. Ebenezer’s case highlights severe concerns surrounding patient safety and hospital protocol.

The following day, Saturday, at around 12:20 PM, officers received a disturbance call from a residence on Homer Street. Officers found a victim reporting an assault by 36-year-old Jacob Lee Haines. The victim also had visible injuries.

New Jersey joins legal fight against Trump’s National Guard deployment
TRENTON, NJ – New Jersey Attorney General Matthew J. Platkin, alongside a coalition of 24 attorneys general and governors, filed a brief on Saturday in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit. The brief supports Illinois in opposition to President Trump’s deployment of the National Guard without approval from the state’s governor.
The coalition’s brief asserts that the President’s actions violate the law, undermine civilian control of the military, and threaten state sovereignty and principles of federalism. Recent orders from the Trump Administration have sent the National Guard to various localities, including California, Washington, D.C., Oregon, and Illinois.
“Judges across the country have made clear what is laid out in the Constitution – Trump’s domestic National Guard deployments are illegal,” Platkin stated. The brief argues that the President’s use of armed forces in these instances parallels actions commonly seen in authoritarian regimes.
On Friday, the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals denied the Trump Administration’s request for an immediate administrative stay, although it did allow for the federalization of the Guard during the stay request’s pendency. The court barred the deployment of any federalized National Guard in Illinois.
Platkin urged the court to reject a broad stay pending appeal that would facilitate the deployment of troops to Chicago. The brief asks the appellate court to uphold the lower court’s decision, which affirms the separation of powers between state and federal authorities.
The attorneys general from Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Hawai‘i, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Washington joined Platkin in filing the brief. Governors from Kansas, Kentucky, and Pennsylvania also supported the effort.
As tensions rise over the deployment issue, the coalition stands firm in its stance against perceived encroachments on state authority.
Government leaders are united in the fight against Trump’s controversial use of National Guard forces across states.

“He was really out there in the marsh,” Miller stated. “When I first observed him, he was just a speck on the screen. He clearly was in trouble.” Following this discovery, Miller contacted the New Jersey State Police, who dispatched a rescue vessel to reach the individual.
Atlantic City Fire Chief Scott Evans highlighted the effectiveness of the drones in emergency response, stating, “This was a perfect example of how drones enhance situational awareness, reduce response times, and contribute to saving lives.”
The use of drones by Atlantic City Public Safety began in 2018. The program has since expanded to include a dozen drones serving various public safety agencies, actively aiding in rescue missions and data collection efforts.
This incident underscores the growing role of technology in public safety operations, demonstrating quick action and collaboration between agencies.
Drones are becoming critical tools in emergency situations.
DA Hoovler announces prison sentence in child rape case
MIDDLETOWN, NY – Eusten Coppin, 27, of Middletown, received a sentence of nine years in prison for rape in the first degree. The ruling came during a hearing last Monday.
Coppin’s sentencing also includes a period of ten years of post-release supervision. The People had initially recommended a twelve-year prison term.
Coppin was required to register as a sex offender under the New York Sex Offender Registration Act due to the nature of his crime. During plea proceedings, Coppin admitted to engaging in sexual intercourse with a victim under the age of thirteen on June 30, 2016.
District Attorney David M. Hoovler expressed gratitude to the City of Middletown Police Department for their investigation which led to Coppin’s arrest. “Those who victimize children deserve the harshest punishment,” Hoovler stated.
The case was prosecuted by Senior Assistant District Attorney Michael Purcell. A criminal charge alone implies an accusation and does not serve as evidence of guilt.
All defendants maintain the presumption of innocence until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
Coppin’s case serves as a reminder of the stern measures the judicial system will take against those who harm children.
Brooklyn woman charged with stealing over $130,000 in Social Security benefits
BROOKLYN, NY — A Brooklyn woman was arraigned this week for allegedly collecting Social Security benefits intended for her deceased mother, totaling over $130,000. District Attorney Eric Gonzalez announced that Katrina McCloud, 52, faces charges of grand larceny and filing false documents.
“This defendant allegedly took advantage of her mother’s death to steal from a program that provides earned benefits to retirees and their families,” Gonzalez stated. He emphasized the importance of protecting public funds and pursuing justice for those who exploit social safety net programs.
McCloud served as her mother’s Representative Payee for Social Security benefits before her mother’s death. Prosecutors allege she failed to notify the Social Security Administration and continued to collect approximately $1,000 monthly from 2012 to 2024, amassing a total of $132,528.
The investigation revealed that McCloud filed false Representative Payee Reports, which are required to verify how benefit funds are used. The reports indicated that her mother was still alive and that the funds were being utilized for her benefit.
Authorities thanked Special Agent Mark Balsam of the Social Security Administration’s Office of the Inspector General and Detective Michael McCaffrey of the New York City Police Department for their roles in the investigation.
McCloud was arraigned before Brooklyn Supreme Court Justice Michael Kitsis and released without bail. She is scheduled to return to court on November 19.
An indictment is an accusatory instrument and not proof of a defendant’s guilt.
Allegations of theft from Social Security prompt scrutiny of local benefits systems.

Local man hits $31,118.30 Racetrax jackpot after gym visit
GLEN BURNIE, MD – A Calvert County man won $31,118.30 playing Racetrax following a visit to the gym. He claimed his prize on October 6 at Maryland Lottery headquarters.
The winning numbers from the August 29 race when he placed his bet were 7, 9, 11, and 12. He used a Superfecta Box bet for those numbers, which secured his substantial prize.
“I almost hit it straight. That would have given me over $200,000,” the winner noted. Although a straight bet would yield a bigger payout, his Superfecta Box with a 10-cent bet per horse in all four possible positions provided a solid return.
The winner has been playing similar combinations for years. He explained that many Racetrax players opt for a Superfecta box with bets on long-odds horses like 12, 11, 10, 9, 8, and 7.
Originally a casino and racetrack gambler, he transitioned to Racetrax after being introduced by a friend. He intends to use his winnings to pay bills and take his family on vacation later this year.
The winning ticket was purchased at the 7-Eleven located at 7753B Baltimore Annapolis Boulevard. The retailer receives a 1% bonus of $311 for selling the winning ticket.
A trip to the gym just paid off big for one lucky man.
O’Scanlon demands transparency from New Jersey treasury amid budget concerns
TRENTON, NJ – Senate Budget Officer Declan O’Scanlon sent a letter to New Jersey State Treasurer Elizabeth Maher Muoio, requesting immediate updates on financial disclosures previously shared with rating agencies and the financial market. O’Scanlon asserts that Governor Murphy’s administration has concealed a budget deficit of $4 billion that could burden the next Governor and Legislature.
O’Scanlon warns that if the administration does not address the financial situation before selling $1.5 billion in new debt this month, he will file a complaint with the Securities and Exchange Commission. “After reviewing Treasury’s financial disclosures, I felt like someone at a disreputable used car lot had tried to sell me a car without telling me it was recovered from a flood,” said O’Scanlon.
In his letter, the senator criticized the treasury for failing to adequately represent the state’s financial condition. He noted specific omissions, stating that the documents did not clarify about $4 billion of financial “cliffs” designed into the upcoming state budget.
O’Scanlon emphasized the need for transparency in financial reporting. He added that the material presented by the treasury was misleading, both in its stated content and omissions that are critical for reasonable evaluation by rating agencies and analysts.
O’Scanlon’s letter highlighted the moral and legal responsibilities treasury holds toward the public. He insisted that the public and financial markets deserve complete information about the state’s financial health.
The full letter from O’Scanlon can be accessed through the Senate Republicans’ website.
O’Scanlon’s demands come amid heightened scrutiny of state finances, as the administration prepares for potential new debt obligations. The senator’s call for transparency signals ongoing concerns about fiscal management in New Jersey.
Taxpayers are watching closely as Senate Budget Officer O’Scanlon pushes for a clearer picture of the state’s financial situation.
