Congressman Opposes New Verizon Tower in Belmar

Belmar, NJ — Rep. Chris Smith (R-Manchester) has issued a letter to Verizon, asking the company to rethink its plans for installing twenty 30-foot 5G towers along Belmar’s boardwalk. The letter is addressed to Robert Fisher, Senior Vice President of Federal Government Relations at Verizon.

In his correspondence, Smith cites economic, aesthetic, environmental, and health concerns raised by the local community. He underscores Belmar’s status as a top tourist destination in New Jersey and warns that the towers could negatively impact the town’s seasonal economy.

Smith also points to worries around the potential health effects of 5G technology on humans and wildlife, calling for comprehensive studies before proceeding with the installation.

The letter comes at a pivotal moment as Verizon’s lawsuit against the Borough of Belmar has shifted focus to Monmouth County, the actual owner of the boardwalk property. Smith questions the urgency and legality of Verizon’s actions, stating that he is aligned with Monmouth County Commissioner Director Tom Arnone, who has also requested that Verizon rescind its initial plan.

The Congressman closes by urging Verizon to address the valid objections from Belmar residents and officials from other shore municipalities in New Jersey.
