Couple buys last five Scratch-Offs and hits $50K top prize

A Maryland couple’s decision to buy the last five Scratch-Off tickets left on the rack turned into a $50,000 lottery win and plans for a summer getaway.

BALTIMORE, Md. — A Frederick couple is planning a vacation after winning the $50,000 top prize on a Maryland Lottery Money Maker Scratch-Off ticket.

The winning ticket was one of the last five Money Maker Scratch-Offs available at the Giant Foods store at 18331 Leaman Farm Road in Germantown.

The wife told Maryland Lottery officials she has a habit of buying games that are running low in a retailer’s inventory. Seeing only five tickets remaining, she decided to purchase them all.

At first, she wasn’t certain the ticket was a winner.

“I wasn’t sure it was a winner,” she said. “I thought I won $50,000.”

Her husband reviewed the ticket and confirmed it was the game’s top prize.

The couple said they plan to use part of the winnings to take a vacation and place the rest into savings.

“It is a nice little windfall. It is nice to get some extra cash,” the wife said.

She also credited a lucky quarter she keeps by her nightstand, saying she always uses it to scratch her lottery tickets.

The Giant Foods store will receive a $500 bonus for selling the winning ticket.

Money Maker is a $5 Scratch-Off game that launched in December with eight top prizes of $50,000. Maryland Lottery officials said six of those top prizes have now been claimed, leaving two remaining.
