Crash with downed power lines traps drivers on Route 34 in Wall Township, crews rescue occupants

Wall Township, NJ – Multiple drivers were trapped inside their vehicles after a crash brought down utility poles and live power lines across Route 34 on April 17, prompting a coordinated rescue response before all occupants were safely freed.

Glendola Fire Company responded Friday morning to reports of a motor vehicle crash involving poles and wires down on top of cars, arriving to find a dangerous scene with energized lines draped over vehicles.

Chief 2-66 was first on scene and confirmed multiple poles and power lines had fallen, pinning vehicles and trapping occupants inside.

Crews hold fire back while waiting for power shutdown

Engine 2-73 arrived shortly after and worked to contain a fire hazard as crews navigated the risk posed by live electrical lines.

Firefighters were forced to wait for Jersey Central Power & Light (JCP&L) to shut down electricity to the area before attempting rescues, a critical step to prevent electrocution.

Once power was confirmed off, crews moved in to remove occupants from the vehicles.

Key Points

• Crash on Route 34 brought down poles and live wires onto vehicles
• Firefighters delayed rescue until JCP&L shut off power to ensure safety
• All trapped occupants were safely removed from vehicles

Multi-agency response at hazardous scene

South Wall Rescue 3 assisted Glendola Fire Company at the scene, helping with both fire suppression efforts and the extrication of those trapped inside the damaged vehicles.

The presence of downed wires significantly complicated the response, requiring coordination between fire crews and the utility company before any hands-on rescue could begin.

High-risk conditions from downed lines

Incidents involving downed power lines are among the most dangerous for both victims and first responders, as electricity can travel through vehicles and surrounding surfaces.

Fire crews followed protocol by stabilizing conditions and waiting for utility crews, rather than attempting immediate extrication under live wires.

What happens next

Officials have not released details on injuries or the cause of the crash, and no further information about those involved has been made public.

The incident remains under review as crews continue assessing damage to utility infrastructure and the roadway.
