D.C. carjackers crash and run before cops reel them in

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Two men were arrested Friday afternoon following a carjacking in Northeast D.C. that ended in a vehicle crash less than two hours later, the Metropolitan Police Department confirmed Saturday.

Around 12:19 p.m. on June 6, officers responded to the 300 block of N Street NE, where a victim reported being approached by two suspects while seated inside their vehicle. The suspects demanded the victim’s belongings and car keys before fleeing in the stolen vehicle.

At approximately 2:10 p.m., officers spotted the vehicle after it was involved in a crash near 11th and I Streets NE. Both suspects attempted to flee on foot but were quickly apprehended by responding units.

The suspects were identified as 22-year-old Ira Shaw-Bates of Southeast D.C. and 40-year-old Derrick Coltrane of Northeast D.C. Both have been charged with carjacking.

Police have not released further details on whether any weapons were used during the incident or if the victim sustained any injuries.

The investigation remains ongoing.
