A 36-year-old Deputy U.S. Marshal was fatally shot after a suspect allegedly opened fire while officers attempted to serve an arrest warrant at a residence.

WESTFIELD, NJ — The Westfield Police Department is mourning the loss of Deputy U.S. Marshal Michael Andrew Hanson, who was fatally shot while serving an arrest warrant earlier this week.

According to the U.S. Marshals Service, the shooting occurred on Monday, July 13, as law enforcement officers attempted to serve an arrest warrant on a suspect wanted for failing to appear in state court to face trial on a charge of sexual battery involving a person with infirmities.

Authorities said officers entered the residence and located the suspect in a bedroom, where the suspect allegedly opened fire.

Deputy U.S. Marshal Michael Andrew Hanson, 36, was struck during the exchange and died from his injuries.

Hanson joined the U.S. Marshals Service in 2020.

He is survived by his wife and two children.

In a statement, the Westfield Police Department extended its condolences to Hanson’s family, friends, and coworkers.
